U13 Hurling Western Final

Cois Bhride 4-05 An Gaeltacht 3-02

Last Saturday morning we travelled to Fraher Field to play An Gaeltacht in the Western U13 Hurling Final. Having been defeated by the same opposition just over two weeks earlier we knew we were facing a very good An Gaeltacht side. Aided by the stong breeze in the first half we settled quickly and opened the scoring with a great goal from William Cunningham. Soon after An Gaeltacht were reduced to 14 men after an off the ball incident which had a huge bearing on the game. However to their credit An Gaeltacht soon equalized with a goal. As the game approached half time we were finding scores hard to come by with the Gaeltacht defense holding strong. However up stepped Mark Stewart with two opportunist goals and a Kieran Crawford point to left us 3-02 to 1-01 ahead at half-time. In the second half An Gaeltacht got off to a great start and added a goal that their pressure deserved. With Oisin Ormonde and Jack Murphy marshalling the full back line and Ben Aherne putting in a man of the match performance at wing back An Gaeltacht were unable to add to their tally until late in the game. Having weathered the storm, Mark Stewart received a precise pass from Liam Motherway that put him through for a goal. Buoyed by his earlier goals, Mark made no mistake and rounded the goal keeper to score his hat trick. This was followed by points from Kieran Crawford and Ciaran McCarthy and a then a great point from Mark Stewart to ensure we held out for a deserved win. After the game Western Bord na nOg Chairman Billy Devine presented the shield to the Cois Bhride captain Ben Aherne. Next Saturday we travel to Walsh Park to play Clonea in the County Final.

Minor Hurling Championship

Our Minor Hurlers are back in action this evening (Wednesday) when we travel to Ardmore to play the hosts in the County Championship @ 6.30pm.

Congratulations to Colm Roche and the Waterford Minor Hurlers on winning the All-Ireland Minor Final last Sunday in Croke Park. This was the first time Waterford has won the Minor All-Ireland since 1948. Colm once again made a huge contribution to the game with 3 outstanding points from play. Looking back on the year, with Waterford close to exiting the competition in Pairc Ui Rinn after a disastrous first half against Cork it was Colm who led the comeback with 1-02 within two minutes of the second half resuming. Without those scores from Colm, it could have been a totally different year!

Well Done

Well done to Ian Beecher who was part of the Waterford U14 Team who competed in the annual Tony Forristal competition last week.
