Minor Hurling

Cois Bhride 5-20 Ferrybank 3-09

Last Wednesday evening we hosted Ferrybank in the Minor Hurling Championship. Ferrybank had won their three previous games in the Championship and were top of the league so a tough game was expected. However after Ferrybank opened the scoring we played our best hurling of the championship so far and four points from Rob O’Sullivan frees and a goal from Stefan Tobin on 15 minutes put us into a 1-05 to 0-1 lead. We continued to dominate for the remainder of the half and a Keegan O’Farrell goal just before half-time ensured that we led by 2-12 to 0-05 at the break. However as often happens when teams are comfortably ahead we took our foot of the pedal and let Ferrybank in for three goals. However to our credit we responded with three goals of our own and closed out the game for a well deserved win. Next up we travel to Ballymacarbry to face Fourmilewater next Monday evening.

Croke Park Activity Day

Our U12s travelled to Croke Park last Monday to play a blitz against teams from Limerick, Clare and Cork. In our opening game we played Croagh/Killfinny from Limerick. Playing in the unfamiliar surroundings of Croke Park we were slow to settle, and as a result Croagh scored 1-03 within the first few minutes. However we soon began to play some good hurling and an Eoin McGrath goal brought us back into the game. After putting some pressure on the Croagh goal they broke up field to score another goal. In the end we lost out on a 2-04 to 2-00 scoreline. In our next game we faced Feakle from Clare. This was a very tight game between two evenly matched teams with both defences ensuring scores were hard to come by. However early points from Padraig Hynes and Mark Stewart and a free from Sean Henley ensured that we led by 0-03 to 0-00. However Feakle threw everything at us to get the equalising goal and it took a great diving save from Dean Beecher and some heroic defending from Oisin Ormonde and Jack Murphy in the full-back line to keep the Clare men out. In the end we did enough to hold out and faced Cork’s Tracton in our last game. The lads were now growing in confidence and kept their best performance of the day for the last game. Within the first few minutes we laid siege on the Tracton goal and before long the pressure paid off as goals from William Cunningham and Michael Condon and some great frees from Mark Stewart gave us a comfortable lead. For the remainder of the game we continued to play well and ran out comfortable winners on a 4-07 to 1-02 scoreline. After the blitz the team then took in a tour of the Croke Park museum and stadium, including testing their skills in the hurling alley and interactive area. On the way home we home we stopped in Portlaoise for some refreshments before returning home from a very enjoyable day. At a time when the GAA is often criticised for ticket prices etc. they must be complicated for this initiative. Last Monday it gave a total of 480 children from Munster the opportunity to play on Croke Park and everything was co-ordinated in a very efficient manner. Our thanks also to the parents that travelled to Dublin last Monday to support the team, it was much appreciated.
